As I found out only after the restarts, they're actually supposed to run after you and help you against the orcs. But the problem was that the other two characters weren't moving at all and just stood still. As far as I understood the problem (after restarting a few times), all three characters (Elrond, Elendil, Isildur) must be in the ring before the fight can start. I was able to walk up to him and run around him, but he just stood there laughing constantly without attacking me or anything. The worst glitch I've had so far was that the fight against Sauron just didn't start. I'm surprised by how many different glitches there are just in the prologue.
